1. THIS MONTH'S COLOURS: RED AND GREEN
Even without holly, sub-tropical Australian nature is bright with greens
and reds.
Our suburbs, national parks and rain forests are lush with colour. Though
our pointsettia trees, several metres high, (known as Christmas Star in
Europe and Christmas Flower in America) shed their mid-year blooms, the
poinciana, flame and bougainvillea trees are equally brilliant.
How many of us feel green with nerves before giving that Christmas party
speech or toast? Or red-faced when we stutter or drop a clanger? Relax.
We're normal!
(See a list of famous stutterers in the Red Faces section below.)

2. THE SEASON TO BE JOLLY *** Power Tip Number 1 ***
The Power in a Smile or a Laugh
When paralysed with nerves, we need to keep a sense of humor. As Buddha
said "Nothing is left to you at this moment but to have a good laugh."
Ancient Chinese medical texts vouch for the healing effects of laughter.
A physician in Classical Rome noted that women who were "melancholy" were
more likely to have "tumours in the breast."
"A cheerful heart is a good medicine, but a downcast spirit dries up the
bones"
says the Book of Proverbs.
Being gloomy is hard work! We use 13 muscles to smile, but 72 to frown.
Laughter is a powerful medicine. When Norman Cousins was diagnosed with
severe spinal arthritis and doctors gave him a one in 500 chance to live.
He hired bulk comedy videos, thought positively - and laughed his way to
health. See his book "Anatomy of an Illness." (Norton, NY, 1979)
Smiling is even a brain-tonic! For when we smile, our zygomatic muscle
contracts, sending increased blood to our brain. As blood pressure
consequently rises and falls, the brain receives an oxygen bath similar to
that from a short exercise work-out.
Let us be sensitive, however, to many struggling, underprivileged people
who are depressed and pressured by the festive season. Media saturation
which depicts "happy families" receiving lavish gifts creates high
expectations and alienates the lonely; gourmet over-indulgence is obscene
in a world where many starve. Social workers see more family stress,
argument, violence and break-down in the Christmas season.
A challenge: Let's bring smiles to sadder faces this season.

3. JOY TO THE WORLD! *** Power Tip Number 2 *** LET'S SING!
Singing or humming elongated vowels for extended periods
* oxygenates the body
* deepens breathing
* relaxes muscles
* stimulates energy flow
* balances brain flow
* reduces the heart rate
* imparts a feeling of well-being.
(Source: Don Campbell, The Mozart Effect , Hodder and Stoughton)
So - let's go sing carols!
Especially those rich in vowel sounds, like "Silent Night, Holy Night."
Or Gregorian Chant. "Chanting is akin to having a brain massage," says
Campbell, for the vowel sounds' reverberate in the skins and bone, so their
vibrations stimulate the frontal lobes of the brain."
We can improvise our own chants whether the text be Alleluia, Om or Shalom.
Singing and chant can boost our immune system -- actor Henry Fonda used
them to recover from vocal problems.

4. THE HEALING POWER OF MUSIC *** Power Tip Number 3 ***
* Listening to Music Can Relieve Pain:
Patients in critical care in a Baltimore hospital listen to Classical
music. Says Dr. Raymond Bahr: " Half an hour of Classical music produced
the same results as ten milligrams of Valium." (Campbell)
* Listening to Music to Unlock Creativity
French actor Gerard Depardieu was thought a dunce and could barely complete
a sentence. His incoherence was cured and his creativity unlocked by
listening to Mozart and Gregorian chant. (More information in Taking
Centre-Stage and Campbell)
We wish you joy, peace, blessings and love this festive yule!

5. TESTIMONIAL
"What helped me the most was the realisation that all who perform in one
way or another have the same anxieties as I do -- or should I say did. I
now feel more in control of the situation and this is reflecting in my
performance. Thank you for the lecture, and I have found 'Taking
Centre-Stage' very helpful."
Roger Richardson, Geelong, Australia
